Schroth Method
The Schroth method is an effective exercise-based treatment for scoliosis, which has been practiced since 1921. Schroth is effective as a standalone treatment for smaller curves and is often paired with bracing for superior results.
What is Schroth?
The Schroth method was developed by Katharina Schroth (a scoliosis sufferer) who wanted a more proactive approach to improving some of the functional issue associated with scoliosis. Schroth therapy was made available by Katharina as early as 1921[1] and is thus one of the longest standing treatment methodologies available.
The Schroth method itself is comprised of more than 100 individual exercises, which are chosen and organised individually for each patient. A Schroth program usually consists of 6-8 core exercises which are specifically targeted for the curve in question. This is because the Schroth method recognises that what's appropriate for the common 3-curve, right thoracic scoliosis, for example, would not work for the 4-curve variety.
Schroth therapy goes beyond other methodologies in that it seeks to provide an approach which actively works to arrest and improve scoliosis during everyday life, rather than just during targeted exercise sessions.
Our Analysis
Schroth therapy is a well established and easy to use treatment methodology which some experts consider to be the best exercise-based methodology for treating Idiopathic Scoliosis. [2] As an independent treatment, some studies have shown a reduction of cobb angle of 10-15 degrees over the course of a year[3] – however Schroth therapy combines particularly well with bracing. When Schroth is combined with bracing superior results can often be achieved more quickly.[4]

How does the Schroth method work?
Schroth therapy therefore seeks to correct spinal rotation and increase lung capacity with a rotational breathing technique, help restore normal spinal position with pelvic corrections and breathing techniques, and improve your posture during routine daily living, not just during therapy.

The combination of bracing with Schroth therapy as an area of considerable research at this time. A recent study further explored the validity of a combined bracing and Schroth approach – it showed that Schroth exercise during bracing was superior to bracing alone in improving Cobb angles, trunk rotation, and quality of life scores. Furthermore, patients who complied fully with their exercise program showed a higher rate of Cobb angle improvement. [7]

When to choose Schroth
The Schroth method is an excellent standalone approach which can be suitable for treating small curves as a standalone treatment. Schroth therapy is also an excellent approach to pair with bracing.
